Teaching theme to 3rd graders can be challenging. Students need to draw conclusions to identify the theme. This week we focused on the different types of themes found in stories, both fiction and non fiction.
We began by learning the definition of different themes. Here you can see how students glued the themes and an example into notebook. After students worked with their partner and they identified the theme with a matching activity. I like to glue this into their notebook so they can have it as a reference.
At the end of the week students read 4 short biographies and answered how they demonstrated the theme. On Friday they were assessed with a short vocabulary quiz.
